Grace Leadership Development Model Summary

·         Philosophy

Grace’s Leadership Development Model is based on the method of training that Jesus used with his Twelve Disciples and on other Scriptural principles.  It emphasizes training regarding core doctrine (2 Tim 3:14) and skills as well as the character of the Leader.  The program also facilitates the direct, personal involvement of mentor with disciple that is seen exemplified and taught in the New Testament (Mark 3:14, Luke 6:40, Acts 4:13, 2 Tim. 3:14).

·         Development

Grace's Leadership Development Team, formed in April 2005, studied the Scriptures, with an emphasis on the New Testament, and reviewed the leadership development approaches of Grace Fellowship Church in Timonium, MD, Willow Creek Community Church, Saddleback Community Church, North Point Community Church and other church and parachurch organizations.  The Team also consulted Grace Community Church Elders and Senior Staff, Ministry Directors, and some Key Lay Leaders.

  • Entrance

While some Workshops will be open to the Grace public, involvement typically in this program will be by invitation only after the recommendation by a known Grace Leader and the approval of a Coach after an interview.  In addition, successful nominees will meet the following criteria:

    • Identified as a Believer
    • Currently be in some kind of accountability relationship within Grace Community Church (e.g. Grace Group, Men’s Fraternity, ministry relationship, etc.)
    • Currently leading or serving or willing to do so
    • Openness to be under the care/oversight of a coach

·         Approach

Grace's Leadership Development Model combines structured learning and follow-up meetings between the leader in training and their coach.  Every Leadership Development Workshop is participative and includes an assignment that gives the Leader the opportunity to practically apply that about which they've been learning.  The Leader discusses this assignment with their Coach and reviews their execution after completion of the task.

The quality of the Coach / Leader Relationship is the strongest indicator of successful Leadership Development and its most critical component.

Roles within the Grace Leadership Development Program

Workshop Facilitator:

Workshop Facilitators will be initially selected by the Grace Leadership Development Team in partnership with the coaches and key Grace leaders.  They will be gifted in facilitation and will teach in an interactive environment with a constant eye to application and relevancy.  Sessions will culminate in a homework assignment that will give Leaders-in-Training the opportunity to apply what's been learned.

Coaches:

Coaches oversee the development of Leaders-in-Training.  The coach guides their leaders-in-training as they execute assignments given by Workshop Facilitators in the Grace Leadership Development Workshops.  They meet with their leaders-in-training on a regular basis and, as the relationship develops over time, will include discussion on their use of the spiritual disciplines, heart relationship with God, key relationships (family, work, community, church), and hold them accountable in areas of struggle.

Leaders-in-Training:

The Leader may fit one of three profiles:  1) a person in a formal Grace leadership role, 2) a person leading informally at Grace, or 3) a person identified as having leadership potential.
